• In 2010, this vibrant site - now teeming with vegetables, chickens, ducks, bees, a gazebo, benches and a garden shed - was a vacant lot that invited dumping, littering, and housing for those with alcohol or drug addictions. Sponsored by Westside Community Action Network, the neighborhood has embraced this bit of earth where, this year, gardeners tend to plants in 32 plots and 12 large containers. In an experiment with co-op gardening, vegetables will be planted in strategically dedicated beds rather than having plots tended by individuals or families. Members of the garden cooperative will then share the produce in proportion to their contributions in hope of increasing productivity for all. Stop by to see if it is working!

• Directions: From I-35 take #1C/Southwest Blvd./W. Pennway Blvd. downtown KCMO. Go 0.1 mile. Turn west on W. Pennway St. Go 0.2 miles. Arrive at Ruiz Library. Farm is across the street. From Main St. Turn west onto 20th St. Garden is situated on the corner of 20th St. and W. Pennway Blvd. Plenty of parking on street.
