Rain gardens for the Tony Aguirre Community Center The Westside Natural Habitat Committee invites you to learn about plans to build rain gardens at Tony Aguirre Community Center. Westside resident Patrick Dobson will present plans, pictures, and information about the rain garden effort, Thursday, May 1, 6:30 p.m., at the Irene Ruiz Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, 2017 West Pennway Blvd.
The two rain gardens planned for the community center total 1,140 square feet and are planned to be adjacent to the existing Westside Butterfly Garden and Monarch Way Station. The rain gardens will help in managing stormwater runoff from Observation Park, the community center roof and grounds, and the Villa Del Sol housing complex.
Besides easing infrastructure and pollution problems associated with urban water runoff, they will also create natural habitat for native plant and animal species, serve as possible nature classrooms for Alta Vista High School and Primitivo Garcia World Language School, and help build and extend relationships in and outside the community, as well as between the community and the environment.
The rain gardens are the result of Westside community volunteer efforts. The following organizations are sponsoring the Westside Natural Habitat Committee's rain garden effort:
Westside Action for Youth (WAY) Coalition Tony Aguirre Community Center Advisory Board Kansas City Public Library Mattie Rhodes Art Center Westside CAN Center Kansas City, MO, Parks and Recreation Department Missouri Department of Conservation Missouri Youth Conservation Corps Hallmark Foundation
